Variable Data Printing

Variable Data Printing (VDP) also called Variable Information Printing, Personalized Printing, or Database Publishing is used to customize each document within a run of digital printing. VDP enables the "mass-customization" of documents as opposed to the "mass-production" of a single document (using offset lithography). Instead of mass-producing a "static" document that will deliver just one message to 10,000 customers, for example, Variable Data Printing could be used to generate 10,000 unique documents with customized messages for each of those 10,000 people. VDP is used by marketers who need to custom-tailor highly relevant messages to each individual in a marketing campaign. In one-to-one (1:1) marketing, variable data printing is used to customize direct marketing or marketing collateral because the text, images, graphics and offers can be "varied" within each separate document to best meet a customer's wants and needs. Variable Data Printing can only be accomplished with digital printing. The finished quality of a customized, full color document is excellent, with a look and feel comparable to conventional offset using the HP Indigo 3500. Customized Documents/Brochures/Collateral Pieces

There are different levels of communications from the "least relevant" through the "most relevant", here are the different levels of how content can be customized within a document:

Static – This is a "one size fits all" marketing message. Your marketing message is "mass-produced" using conventional offset lithography and every customer will receive the same message, regardless of their relationship or profitability to your company.

Personalized – Each customer's name and address will appear on each document to attract attention but the marketing message is static and exactly the same for each and every customer, regardless of their relationship or profitability to your company.

Versioned – Segmented versions of a document are created to meet the needs of different groups. Your customer base is segmented according to demographic or other attributes, perhaps by a previously expressed interest. Example, customers/clients/prospects could be segmented by age or goals, or automobile owners can be segmented by the model they own, or their location could determine the version. Customized content is then delivered that best addresses the needs of each particular group.

Fully Customized – At this level of direct marketing, each document's content is fully customized to be highly relevant and custom-tailored to a specific individual. A full color document is composed and everything in the document can be varied- the layout, look, messages, and images can all be interchangeable depending on the customer. Charts and graphs can be generated automatically and instantly included in a finished document.
